I'm not proud of it, but Mr. X shows up more and more these days. Especially for the clients who have committed this same offense before.
It was soft-heartedness that me to this work. Empathy for all of their impossible situations. But as I see more of the same thing over and over I sometimes grow resentful.
Not resentful that they've put themselves in this position because, truly, their situations really are tragic. But because so many want out with so few consequences. And any consequences are my fault.
One man got into a fight with the police a few years ago, for example. And not it's happened again. Terrible luck. And his wife left him and his sister won't help him with the kids. So he needs to get home, you see. And all I do is lie to him.
Enter Mr. X. You made these choices, Sir. You did; not me. The only through-line that I see in this long list of misfortunes that you keep telling me is you and your choices.
