I thought this level was very much a misnomer, as there seemed to be only way to complete it. However, it took me about 400 tries to realize that I'm just not good enough to get the gold in the upper left corner with an evil ninja chasing me; if I was ever going to beat this level, I had to get that gold first.
So, in the end, I did find my own way, which is not the way of the speed runner. That's ok. I'll take the win.
